Should Manchester United’s Late Winner Have Stood?

Manchester United sealed their place in the FA Cup quarter-final thanks to a late winner from Casemiro. However, replays have shown a controversial look at the goal.

What was wrong with Casemiro’s goal?

Casemiro’s goal was highlighted on social media as viewers pick up on an incident that they feel was enough to  disallow it.

Raphael Varane was standing in an offside position as Bruno Fernandes whipped in a free-kick. He was blocking a Nottingham Forest player from getting into the box. Casemiro then headed Manchester United in front.

Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White took to social media to point out that the same situation was given as offside for the Virgil Van Dijk goal against Chelsea a few days prior. Endo, in an offside position, was penalised for blocking Levi Colwill from reaching Van Dijk.

The decision went Manchester United’s way and they now have a quarter-final tie against bitter rivals Liverpool.

Nottingham Forest’s VAR woes

Nottingham Forest have fumed at VAR decisions this season. To help them understand the VAR process, Mark Clattenburg has been hired by Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis. Clattenberg has been added to the City Ground’s staff in a bid to ‘improve understanding and relationships’.

Nottingham Forest fans, players and staff were certainly confused by the decision not to disallow Casemiro’s goal.

In his post-match interview, Nottingham forest manager Nuno Espirito put it down to their luck with VAR.

He said: “I didn’t see clearly the images but speaking with the players they say it is a block and a possible offside. They checked it.

“We have had so many issues in this period with VAR and referees that we try to forget about it and move forward. I think it was a good performance, we played good, much better than the previous game, so improvement from that.

“It is frustrating to lose it in the end but I think we played good, football is cruel sometimes and today we are on that side.”

VAR problems continue

One of the biggest problems with VAR is inconsistency. There’s been too many decisions that are given in one game and then not given in the next.

Another example of this came in the Nottingham Forest and Manchester United game. Felipe grabs Fernandes by the neck which went unpunished by VAR. Manchester United fans were quick to point out that Casemiro was shown a red card in another game for committing the same offence.
