In light of recent performances by backup goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, should Liverpool sell Alisson in the summer to make some money?

Should Liverpool sell Alisson?

It seems impossible to think that Liverpool would sell the Brazilian No 1 goalkeeper as he’s been considered the best keeper in the world for quite a few years now.

However, Alisson turns 32 this year and his current market value stands at around £27.5m. Alisson’s market value may seem low for someone so reliable in goal but age and recent injuries are taken into consideration. His highest value was at £77m back in 2019.

Alisson has missed 18 games for Liverpool this season and that tally is expected to rise as it’s rumoured he might not return until late April.

Liverpool fans haven’t really missed him, as everyone has been talking about Kelleher, who has become Liverpool’s new brick wall.

With Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool next season, it’ll be up to the next manager whether to stick with Alisson or keep Kelleher.

Liverpool’s FFP worries

Financial fair play is something that a lot of clubs are worrying about these days. Last season, Liverpool spent £147million on rebuilding their squad. They only made around £52m in selling players.

Current FFP rules state that clubs that are not in a European competition can lose up to £105m over a three-year period. Teams that are in Europe can only lose up to £68.5m.

Four Premier League teams have been penalised or are under investigation for breaking FFP rules in the past year. More and more clubs are getting caught out and it’s becoming a huge priority to have finances under control.

However, it was announced recently that FFP rules will be changed and become less restrictive to help out smaller teams.

It’s understood that Liverpool are looking to renew Mohamed Salah’s contract. Salah’s contract is around £350k-a-week and renewing it would have a massive effect on Liverpool’s finances.

Should Kelleher be Liverpool’s new number one?

He has really shone since Alisson’s injury and he played a huge part in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup win over Chelsea.

Kelleher is only 24-years-old and has got a lot to give to the club. If Liverpool don’t decide to sell Alisson, it’s likely that the Irish goalkeeper will move on to another club where he would get first team action.

Kelleher would be a huge loss for Liverpool as his market value stands at £13m. Letting him go for that cheap would feel like a waste.

Liverpool’s backup goalkeepers include Adrian and 21-year-old Marcelo Pitaluga. Pitaluga is currently on loan at St Patrick’s Athletic but he has a big career ahead of him. He’s received big praise from Alisson.
