In September 2008, Mansour acquired Manchester City football club from former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

By 23 September 2008, the Abu Dhabi United Group, backed by Mansour, were successful in their full takeover of the club.

He also owns the City Football Group, which was founded in 2014 and consists of Manchester City FC, Melbourne City FC, New York City FC, Mumbai City FC, and others.

The Manchester City owner is one of the wealthiest men in not only football, but the world and has a reported net worth of £17 billion.

Sheikh Mansour has also invested over £2 billion into the football club and continues to boost the club financially – despite recent FFP charges.

How Did Sheikh Mansour Acquire His Wealth?

The Manchester City icon is an Emirati royal and politician, who is also the vice president and deputy prime minster of the United Arab Emirates.

He holds stakes in several football clubs, one being Manchester City, but also Girona in La Liga, Melbourne City in Australia and New York City FC in America.

Mansour is the owner of Abu Dhabi United Group, which is an investment company for the Abu Dhabi royal family that acquired Man City in 2008.

His list of business ventures are mesmeric, Mansour has a 32% stake in Virgin Galactic after he invested over £200 million in 2009.

He also has a 9.1% stake in Daimler after purchasing the stake for £around 2.7 billion in March 2009 and it was reported that he increased the stake to 15% in 2010.

Adding more to this list, Mansour owns the Abu Dhabi Media Investment Corporation (ADMIC) which partnered with British Sky Broadcasting to establish Sky News Arabia – a new Arabic-language news channel headquartered in Abu Dhabi.

ADMIC also owns the English-language newspaper The National, and bought a 2.1% stake in pan-European channel Euronews in 2017.

Prior to Sheikh Mansour’s ownership Manchester City had won, the First Division (1937 & 1968), the Second Division (2002), the FA Cup (1904, 1934, 1956 & 1969), the European Cup Winners’ Cup (1970) and the League Cup (1970 & 1976).

Meaning, upon Sheikh Mansour’s purchase, their most recent trophy was the Second Division in 2002 – now known as the EFL Championship.

Since then Manchester City have gone on to dominate British football, winning seven Premier League titles, the Champions League, three FA Cups, six League Cups and most recently became the second English team to complete the treble.

According to Forbes, Manchester City are now the fifth most valuable club in the world at around £5 billion, behind Liverpool, Barcelona, Manchester United and Real Madrid.
