Following a group of high-profile sporting stars coming together to purchase a €200m stake in the Alpine Formula One team, we’re taking a look at others in the space with stakes in team ownerships.
Sports Stars With Stakes In Team Ownership
Patrick Mahomes (Alpine F1, Kansas City Royals, Sporting Kansas City)
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has his finger in quite a few pies. The two-time NFL MVP joined a group including footballers Trent Alexander-Arnold and Juan Mata, boxer Anthony Joshua and golfer Rory McIlroy to purchase a €200m stake in the Alpine F1 team.
Mahomes joined as part of the syndicate created by the Otro Capital group which also features Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney and Michael B Jordan. His Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce is also a part of this consortium.
In 2020, he became a part owner of MLB franchise Kansas City Royals and was later welcomed as a member of the Sporting Club ownership group for MLS side Sporting KC in 2021.
LeBron James (Liverpool FC, Boston Red Sox)
Back in 2011, NBA superstar LeBron James purchased a 2% ownership stake in Premier League giants Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group for a reported $6.5m. Now, his share is worth over $30m thanks to the club’s continued progression.
In 2021, he joined FSG as a partner which gave him an ownership stake in its subsidiaries which includes MLB franchise Boston Red Sox.
Michael Jordan (Charlotte Hornets, Miami Marlins)
NBA legend Michael Jordan bought the Charlotte Hornets for $180m back in 2010 and recently agreed to sell the team after 13 years in charge for a reported figure of $3bn.
As part of the deal, Jordan will stay on as a minority owner but his decision to sell left the league without a Black majority owner. He also became a part owner of the Miami Marlins of MLB in 2017.
David Beckham (Inter Miami, Salford City)
In February 2014, David Beckham exercised his option to buy a MLS expansion team for $25 million which he had received as part of the contract he signed with LA Galaxy seven years prior.
The club made their debut in March 2020 and now employ one of the greatest footballers of all-time in Lionel Messi. He also joined his Class of ’92 teammates from Manchester United to become a part owner of non-league club Salford City in 2019.
Beckham joined the club as a director alongside Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville.
Serena and Venus Williams (Miami Dolphins)
Tennis superstar sisters Serena and Venus Williams purchased a stake in the Miami Dolphins in 2009, becoming the first Black women to be minority investors in the NFL.
At the time of their purchase, the team was estimated to be worth around $1.2bn – a stark contrast to today’s valuation of over $4.6bn. Serena is also an investor in Angel City FC.
Magic Johnson (LA Dodgers, LA Sparks, LAFC, Washington Commanders)
NBA legend Magic Johnson joined with Guggenheim Partners and Stab Kasten in a bid for ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team in 2012, which ended up paying $2bn for the franchise.
Again with Guggenheim, Johnson was involved in buying WNBA team Los Angeles Sparks in 2014. In 2022, he announced co-ownership of MLS side Los Angeles FC.
Most recently, the Lakers icon invested $240m in a group led by Josh Harris that purchased the NFL’s Washington Commanders for over $6bn, the highest price ever paid for a sports team.
James Harden (Houston Dynamo & Dash)
In July 2019, NBA superstar James Harden became a part owner in Houston’s professional football teams – the MLS’ Houston Dynamo and the NWSL’s Houston Dash.
His investment reportedly valued Dynamo at almost $500m and he currently holds a five per cent stake in the club.
Dwayne Wade (Utah Jazz)
In April 2021, it was announced that NBA icon Dwayne Wade had purchased an undisclosed minority ownership stake in the Utah Jazz – joining an ownership group led by his personal friend and associate Ryan Smith, the Jazz majority owner and team governer.
After the purchase he declared his intent to take a hands-on approach to his involvement and the team has enjoyed an upwards trajectory ever since.
