Late withdrawals from the England squad in November, the most notable of which being James Maddison and Jude Bellingham, opened the door for some of the U21’s star performers to make the step up.
In doing so, Gareth Southgate may have found the ideal solution to a midfield cohort that has lacked any real depth across his recent squad selections.

Lewis in particular caught the eye, even in spite of conceding a wildly contentious handball decision that allowed the hosts to take the lead.
The teenager, as he so often does, look unfazed by the referee’s call and went on to have a busy night in midfield, earning him England’s man of the match award.
Past the typical starters – Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and likely James Maddison – England’s midfield options have been fairly thin on the ground. With just over seven months between now and Euro 2024’s start date, there is plenty of time for Lewis to continue on his rapid upward trajectory.
Manchester City head honcho Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Lewis’ performances this season, claiming he is one of the best players he has “ever coached” and would be considered one of the Premier League‘s best if he was “a little taller.”
Although his game time has been sporadic in the league, he has featured for the full 90 minutes in all but one of Manchester City’s early Champions League defence, providing two assists in the process.
