Ever since he joined Real Madrid, life has been tough for Eden Hazard. Plagued by injuries resulting in not being able to find any form, Hazard is now hinting at retiring from football at the age of 32.
Hazard signed for Real Madrid in 2019 for a deal worth up to a staggering £150m. While the initial transfer fee for Hazard was £88.3m, with add-ons potentially rising to £150m, reports state that although not all of these have been triggered, the cost for the Belgian did surpass the previous club record £90m fee Real paid for Gareth Bale in 2013.
The winger was considered one of the best attackers in the world at the time. He was even on the cover of FIFA 20 which is a great achievement for any footballer. He scored just seven goals in four years at Real Madrid after he had a tremendous run at Chelsea, leaving the club with 110 goals.
The 32-year-old announced his international retirement shortly after the 2022 FIFA World Cup where Belgium failed to progress past the group stage. It was an embarrassing tournament for both Belgium and Hazard. Hazard knew he would retire after the World Cup anyway and his performances were the ‘decisive decision’.
Hazard was followed by a crew for a new documentary titled ‘Believe’ which is based on his Belgium national team. He is seen in one clip perhaps hinting he could be set to call time on his career. “It’s time to enjoy life by drinking a few beers” was the concerning quote from the documentary.
🗣 Eden Hazard: “Little by little, it is time to enjoy life with my family and friends. Drinking a few Jupiler beers.”

The transfer from Chelsea to Real Madrid is ranked 15th in the most expensive of all time. He did end up winning two titles, a Copa del Rey and the 2022 Champions League. But after making just six league appearances last term, Hazard exited Real with a year still remaining on his contract.
Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos doesn’t have any sympathy for Hazard, saying: “We had another player who came for a lot of money and basically let his career die. It was a lot of money, I think everyone would say that wasn’t a good transfer.“
Hazard has reportedly turned down several offers, including a mega deal from the Saudi Pro League. With all the speculation it would seem that Hazard will make an announcement sooner rather than later but for now it remains as speculation. The Belgian turns 33 in January.
