Manchester City will reportedly have to part ways with £75million in order to sign Croatian defensive talent Josko Gvardiol from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig this summer.

DFB Pokal winners RB Leipzig will hold out for £75million in order to sell Croatian starlet Josko Gvardiol this summer, according to talkSPORT.

Manchester City have been linked with the defender for several months, and are also targeting his international teammate Mateo Kovacic.

The 21-year-old has not only been heavily linked with the treble winners, but also Manchester United and Chelsea.

Gvardiol was one of the standout players at the recent World Cup in Qatar, helping his Croatia side to another impressive campaign – picking up a bronze medal.

He has appeared 41 times for Marco Rose’s side this term, playing a total of 3,005 minutes, scoring three goals in the process.

One of the goals memorably came against Pep Guardiola’s side. Gvardiol headed home the equaliser in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash at the Red Bull Arena, before City demolished the German outfit 7-0 in the second leg.

If Manchester City were to match Leipzig’s asking price for Gvardiol, it would make him one of the most expensive defenders in the history of the game.

That title is currently held by a player on the red side of Manchester – Harry Maguire, who joined United for £80million from Leicester in 2019.

Kovacic’s arrival at the Etihad may well play a factor too, with City understood to have held positive talks over personal terms with the Chelsea midfielder.

Whilst away with Croatia last week, the former Real Madrid midfielder publicly admitted that he expects to leave Stamford Bridge.

“I have one more year with Chelsea, this season was very bad.

“Everything is going towards the fact that after five good years I will change, but in football anything can happen. Right now, I’m focused on Croatia and the Nations League.” he said.

The midfielder then went on to speak about City, amid rumours linking him with a move to Guardiola’s side.

“Manchester City is a top team and deserves to be in the Champions League final. That’s what I have to say. The summer is long, we’ll see what happens.

“Chelsea is phenomenal for me. I love the city and the fans, they love me, I have wonderful memories of Chelsea. We’ll see what happens.”
