Since the beginning of 2017, Nicky Henderson is 18 from 80 with his runners in first-time cheekpieces and though we’d make a tiny loss by backing them at SP those who started as favourite (including joint or co-favourites) were nine from 13 for a profit of £14.41. At the time of writing, THE BOMBER LISTON was heading the market at around the 5-2 mark for this 2m7.5f handicap hurdle and he’ll be happier back over hurdles in first-time headgear after failing to adjust to fences.

METHODTOTHEMADNESS (system – Lucinda Russell chasers, first tun after a wind operation)
In-form Lucinda Russell has a seven from 44 record with chasers returning from wind surgery and backing them blind would have returned a profit of £46.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. METHODTOTHEMADNESS is the qualifier here and it’s interesting to note that his sire, Gold Well, has a good record with his progeny who are having their first run back after a wind operation, including five from 24 in handicap chases for a profit of £13.40.
