SANDOWN 1.30

VON BAER (system – Brian Meehan, turf handicaps, gelded since last run)

Since 2015, Brian Meehan has a nine from 13 record in turf handicaps with newly-gelded runners for a profit of £22.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those who started in the first three in the betting were four from seven (+£14.00). VAN BAER, 16-1 at the time of writing, is unlikely to fall into that category, but is still worth a punt. He’s placed in all four starts since his debut and the gelding operation can bring about the required improvement.

BATH 2.55

BALMORAL LADY (system – Ed Walker, second-time out 2yos, won or beaten 5L or less on debut)

In-form Ed Walker has a cracking record with his second-time out juveniles who won or finished within five lengths of the winner on their debuts. He’s scored with 25 of the 77 qualifiers (32.5% strike-rate) for a profit of £30.12 to the usual £1 level stake at SP. BALMORAL LADY, a five-length runner-up to the Gosden’s 1-8 favourite Dorney Lake on debut, is taken to go one better.

UTTOXETER 5.40

VALSAD (system – Harry Derham, stable switchers)

Harry Derham does remarkably well at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other handlers, scoring with 18 of the 45 qualifiers (40% strike-rate) for a profit of £60.28 to a £1 level stake a SP. VALSAD, a three-time winner on the Flat, is likely to prove hard to beat on his first start since leaving Jamie Osborne’s care.

LEICESTER 9.00

PERIANTH (system – Pam Sly, Leicester Flat races, Class 5 or lower)

PERIANTH has a tricky draw to overcome (stall 9 of 10) in this 7f handicap but Pam Sly’s three-year-old made a successful handicap debut over course and distance last time and the form was boosted when the runner-up went one better at Goodwood last night. Her trainer has a fine record in Class 5 or lower company on the Flat at Leicester, scoring with 13 of her 62 such runners (21%) for a massive profit of £149.25 to a £1 level stake at SP.
