DONCASTER 3.10

MR MULDOON (system – 10yos in veterans’ handicap chases)

Ten of the 13 races over the Musselburgh weekend meeting in early February went to those who made the running or raced prominently. Simply backing any horse who led early in its latest outing would have found six winners from 18 bets for a profit of £31.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. MR MULDOON, always up with the pace when a 40-1 winner at Chepstow in January, was given a patient ride in the bet365 Auld Yin Conditional Jockeys’ Veterans’ Handicap Chase and had to settle for an eight-length second to Cyclop, who made most. That was a solid effort in the circumstances and he can continue the good record of ten-year-olds in veterans’ company by taking this 3m contest.

DONCASTER 4.20

HAWTHORN COTTAGE (system – small field preference)

Since her chase debut, HAWTHORN COTTAGE has form figures of 1145241 (3-7) when racing in fields of seven or fewer runners. Amy Murphy’s ten-year-old was well beaten here last time but that was in a big field and over a three-mile trip, a distance she struggles to stay. She looks set to receive an easy lead and could prove hard to pass.

NEWCASTLE 6.45

CINQUE VERDE (system – Karl Burke second-time out 3yos on the all-weather)

Karl Burke’s CINQUE VERDE trailed home over 12 lengths behind the winner when fourth of five at Pontefract on her debut last summer but was sent off at just 6-4 and had clearly been showing something at home. Since the beginning of 2010, her trainer has won with 14 of his 62 three-year-old all-weather runners who were having their second career outing and backing them all would have returned a big profit of £96.08 to a £1 level stake at SP. She looks a good each-way play at around the 10-1 mark.
