Pressure mounting on Newcastle boss Eddie Howe claims Andy Cole

Eddie Howe has done a wonderful job at Newcastle. They were fighting relegation when he took over in late 2021 and in less than two years he has led them to the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2002. But Premier League legend Andy Cole suspects the pressure will be on Eddie Howe this season with the Saudi Arabian owners expecting big things.

Newcastle have had a rocky start to the 2023/24 season. They currently sit 14th in the league table after just one win in their first four matches. The Champions League group stage draw didn’t exactly go to plan as they were drawn with PSG, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan in the so-called ‘group of death’. Things could get tricky fairly quickly for Howe as he must rally his troops to start winning games.

Here’s what Cole has said on the matter:

“Nothing surprises me,” Cole told Betfred. When it comes to owners and fans wanting results, if you’re not getting results then the clubs are going to look for someone else regardless of whether they’re ahead of schedule or not.

“If Newcastle United come back after the international break and lose another league game and lose in the Champions League, then that’s not the start that anybody connected with Newcastle would have wanted, so Eddie would be under a bit of pressure. That’s the game we’re in.

“If you look at a lot of the clubs that have been taken over, the first manager usually lasts around a year. Using Manchester City as an example, Mark Hughes was the first manager of their project and then Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini followed him before they eventually got Pep Guardiola.

“Eddie Howe has done a fantastic job, but football is driven by results and despite the fact that I do believe he will be given time, you just never know what’s going to happen.”

If Newcastle want to go to the next level without Eddie Howe then serial winners could definitely be tempted to take the managers seat. Here’s who we think would be the best candidates > Next Newcastle Manager Odds: Graham Potter 6/1 To Take Over (sportslens.com)

Newcastle’s next game is at home to Brentford before they face a trip the San Siro to face AC Milan in the Champions League.
