Porto 1-0 Arsenal Report: Superb Galeno Goal Crushes Gunners

Arsenal have it all to do in the Champions League round of 16 second leg after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Porto – thanks to a Galeno beauty.

The hosts made a strong start despite being counted as the ‘underdogs’ of this European tie and could have taken the lead through tricky winger, Galeno.

The Brazilian’s effort cannoned off the crossbar and the rebound fell back to his feet, however, his second effort went wide of the post despite being six yards out.

Arsenal failed to register a shot on target in the first half but continued to be a threat from set pieces, surrounding Diogo Costa in the Porto goal.

The teams went into the break level, as neither could break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes.

Mikel Arteta’s side started the second-half better and came close through Leandro Trossard, as the Belgian’s effort flew just over the bar.

The remainder of the half failed to ignite much action, despite Arsenal boasting over 80% of the possession for large parts of the match.

However, in the 93rd minute the main talking point of the match occurred, as Galeno curled the ball into the top left corner from long range and secured the victory for Porto.

Arsenal failed to register a shot on target for the entirety of the match and go into the second leg behind.

What Next For Porto & Arsenal?

Porto will travel to the Emirates on March 12th in the second leg of this Champions League tie and face Gil Vicente in their next Liga Portugal clash.

The Gunners are back in Premier League action on Saturday, as Mikel Arteta’s side welcome Newcastle to north London and will be looking to close the gap on table-topping Liverpool.
