Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola retracted the comments he made about Matheus Nunes when calling him ‘one of the best players in the world.’

Guardiola’s initial comments came after his side’s 5-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the 2021/22 Champions League last-16. Nunes played for Lisbon that day and Guardiola had nothing but praise for him.

Wolves signed Nunes the following season for £42million, making it their record signing. He impressed for them which led to Guardiola finally snatching him up for City for £53m on transfer deadline day.

He made his first start for City in the win against Nottingham Forest over the weekend and provided the assist for Erling Haaland’s goal. Guardiola was questioned about his previous comments after the game:

“Maybe I over-exaggerated a little bit. He’s not [one of the best players in the world]. He is a really good player but sometimes, maybe I said this comment after a 5-0 win, it was actually 5-0? But he’s an exceptional player.”
