Pep Guardiola: Kalvin Phillips Struggles With Our Style Of Play

Pep Guardiola has expressed his frustration regarding £45million signing Kalvin Phillips. Manchester City bought him from Leeds last summer but he’s not made much of an impression on the team.

Guardiola has confirmed he will start Phillips against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup. It will be just his fifth start for the club since joining from Leeds.

“Marcelo [Bielsa] gave Kalvin the best of Kalvin in his career,” said Guardiola. “I’d love to have done with Kalvin what Marcelo has done to him. We have our own specific way to play and [he] sometimes struggles in a few things, while the previous [Leeds playing style] was perfect [for him].”

“The club spoke with him because he did not have many minutes,” added Guardiola. “He said ‘no, I want to stay’. We brought Kalvin here for his quality. He is open minded, always wants to learn and wants to help. This is what we want to try to do.”

It’s not just former Leeds coach Bielsa that has gotten the best out of him. He was key to Gareth Southgate’s squad in the Euro 2020 tournament. He started every game in midfield alongside Declan Rice as England were beaten on penalties in the final by Italy.

With Rodri serving a 3-match ban, it might be Phillips’ time to impress Guardiola if he performs well tonight in the Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle. You can watch this on Sky Sports Main Event at an 8pm kick-off.
