Manchester United secured a late last-gasp victory over Brentford at the weekend, fighting from behind in added time to win 2-1, but Paul Merson says that the result has just ‘papered over the cracks’ at Old Trafford.

It looked as if Manchester United were heading for a third successive defeat on Saturday as they headed into added time a goal down to Brentford, but late substitute Scott McTominay scored twice in the dying moments to turn the game on its head.

A defeat would’ve seen the Red Devils go into the international window languishing in 13th place in the Premier League table, but thanks to the memorable victory – they sneak into the top half in 10th place.

Red Devils fans will be delighted with the result regardless of the performance, but question marks remain over Erik ten Hag and his squad for the remainder of the campaign, especially with their injury worries.

Speaking in his Sky Sports News column, Paul Merson highlighted that the problems for United still remain, and that the victory over the weekend has just ‘papered over the cracks’.

“It was a polyfilla result, just absolutely covering over the cracks! But you have to cover over the cracks with something, and if it is polyfilla, it will cover them over, but they will open up again.” Merson wrote.

“You have to start somewhere, though, they did not give up, they kept on going, and they got the result. But you need a couple more results before you can start saying they are going to be challengers, far from it.

“But fair play though to come back as you have lost a couple of games before, you’ve lost at home to Galatasaray in midweek, and the pressure is on as you are playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
