Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has made a huge ‘Top Four’ prediction for today’s match between Newcastle and Manchester United.

Newcastle are having their best season in recent years, following their new ownership and the Magpies could secure European football. Eddie Howe has transformed a once relegation-battling side into one of the most feared teams in the Premier League.

The Toon will be hoping to take a further step in their quest for Champions League football as they face Manchester United this afternoon. The Red Devils are also having an impressive season, sitting third in the table and even beat Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.

Both sides are set to be missing a variety of crucial players, with Newcastle’s leading scorer Miguel Almiron being doubtful with a knee injury. Similarly, Erik ten Hag will be without Casemiro (suspension) and Alejandro Garnacho (injury).

Star-man, Marcus Rashford, is rumoured to be fit for the huge ‘Top Four’ clash after suffering an injury that withdrew him from the England squad. Paul Merson feels this could be a problem for the Red Devils as they have relied on the Brit for goals.

He said: “Manchester United aren’t playing well at the moment and they’re very reliant on Marcus Rashford and his goals. Someone else has got to chip in now. They’ve had some results but they aren’t ripping it up.”

United will be pleading with the England international to appear in today’s fixture, as he has scored over 30 goals in all competitions this season.

Picking a winner between the two clubs is not an easy task, as they are only separated by three points. However, the former Arsenal player has made a very bold prediction.

Merson said: “Newcastle are playing at home and a draw isn’t good enough for them. I’m going to go with Newcastle to win this game, 2-1.”
