Arsenal legend and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has made a bold statement about the Gunners title chances, saying a win against Everton last week ‘would’ve won them the league’.
Mikel Arteta’s side kept their five-point lead over Manchester City, even after they lost 1-o to Everton last week. James Tarkowski’s bullet header was enough to give the Toffee’s all three points and inflict Arsenal’s second defeat in the Premier League this season.
Merson played for Arsenal in the 80’s and 90’s, making over 300 appearances for the side form north London. The 54-year-old has shown huge admiration for his former side this season and believes that had they beat Everton, then they would have all but confirmed themselves as champions.

Merson said: “If Arsenal had defeated Everton last week, they would’ve won the Premier League.”
Arsenal have the chance to get back to winning ways and wrong the rights of last weekend, as they welcome Europa League contenders, Brentford. Merson feels that this is one of the biggest matches in Arsenal’s season and hopes Arteta doesnt take Thomas Frank’s side lightly.
The Sky Sports pundit said: “This is Arsenal’s biggest game of the season by a million miles. They’ve just had a shocking result against Everton, and it was a poor performance. I’ve said it before – you’re going to lose football matches. It’s about how you respond after you lose.”
With Manchester City losing to Tottenham in their latest fixture, now is the perfect time for the Gunners to capitalise and turn Paul Merson’s claim into a reality.
