Paddy Power have announced they will introduce a new dartboard with a green treble 20, a departure from the conventional red. This change might take some getting used to for darts fans and players.
The dartboard change is part of Paddy Power’s mission to “turn the Ally Pally green for the festive period” ahead of the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship – but is all as it seems?
In an official statement via the PDC, the centre of the Alexandra Palace stage will additionally feature an “electrifying green backdrop”.
Explaining the reasoning for the change, the bookmakers claimed, “Research has shown the colour green sits at the centre of our visual spectrum while red and blue reside at either end of the scale, making them harder to see.
“That means not only is green the colour we perceive more accurately, but it also aids improved precision and decreased eye fatigue.”
PDC chief executive Matthew Porter had this to say about the change: “We have always said as an organisation that we want to move and evolve with the times.
“If after 30 years of our World Championship being played on a traditional dartboard, change means improvement for the standard and quality of the sport, and it directly benefits the health of players, then we owe it to them to give it a go.
“We saw 901 180s struck during last year’s tournament and maybe we’ll break the 1,000 mark this year for the first time ever. It’s great to be working with Paddy Power and we hope the players are as excited about this change as we are.”
The apparent change has caused a stir on social media, which is likely exactly what the bookmakers are looking for. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time the bookmakers have pulled off a bizarre publicity stunt to spark conversation.
In 2019, Paddy Power pulled off a similar stunt when they were announced as the main sponsors for Huddersfield Town’s football kit.
Initially, the new kit for the 19/20 season was plastered with really large and obvious Paddy Power sponsoring, causing a huge uproar on Twitter. However, a few days later, the kit was actually revealed to have no sponsoring, as part of the bookmaker’s ‘Save Our Shirt’ campaign to move back towards unbranded kits.
Twitter Reacts To New Dartboard Change

About time – I have been saying this for years – green is by far the best colour – why can’t we have the single 20 changed to yellow 🤔👍- @paddypower @OfficialPDC @Winmau @lpdetecting @EmpireFightingC @ModusDarts180 @THEDJSHOP https://t.co/JfjCtEVqSg
