Paddington was made to work for it, but the Aidan O’Brien-trained 3 year-old won the 2023 Sussex Stakes on the second day of the Glorious Goodwood Festival on Wednesday – giving his handler a sixth success in the Group One race.
Paddington Lands Sussex Stakes in Workmanlike Fashion
Having taken up the running from the stalls, Ryan Moore and Paddington led pretty much from pillar-to-post to win the 2023 Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood – fending off challenges from all the other four rivals.
For a moment it looked like Frankie Dettori was going to upset the odds in his last ever Sussex Stakes ride on Inspiral – but, despite travelling up well to Paddington, couldn’t go through with her effort.
Charyn and Aldaary had bites at this season’s Coral-Eclipse winner too, but it was left for the French raider Facteur Cheval to push Paddington hard to the line.
The eventual winning margin was 1 1/2 lengths, but Paddington only really pulled away in the final 1/4 of a furlong (watch below). This Glorious Goodwood win made it 6-from-7 for Paddington with this Siyouni colt having now won four Group Ones on the spin – the Irish 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes, Coral Eclipse and Sussex Stakes – ranging from 1m up to 1m2f.
After the race jockey Ryan Moore said about Paddington “as good as I’ve ridden”.

Aidan O’Brien Lands His Sixth Sussex Stakes
Paddington’s Sussex Stakes win also meant trainer Aidan O’Brien has now won the Glorious Goodwood day two feature six times and is just one win shy of matching Sir Henry Cecil’s haul of 7 successes.
O’Brien’s first victory in the race came with the mighty Giant’s Causeway in 2000 and has since added successes with Rock Of Gibraltar (2002), Henrythenavigator (2008), Rip Van Winkle (2009) and The Gurkha (2016).
The win also gave Ryan Moore his second Sussex Stakes win, having ridden O’Brien’s The Gurhka in 2016.
Where Next For Paddington? O’Brien Superstar Into 7/4 For Juddmonte International at York
Paddington has now raced six times since the 26th March, but has won them all and clearly a horse that takes his racing well.
He’s still a young colt at the age of 3, so those looking to take him on might look to his busy schedule this summer, while the last two wins have been hard-fought and the last on much softer ground.
Will these efforts start to take their toll?
We’ll probably find out later this month as the next possible date for Paddington is in the Group One Juddmonte International Stakes at the York Ebor Festival on Wednesday 23rd August.

Aidan O’Brien has won the Juddmonte Stakes a record-equalling 6 times – an achievement he shares with Sir Michael Stoute.
While Paddington is also in the Prix De l’Arc de Triomphe (1st Oct) betting @10/1 with Paddy Power – a race that would require the O’Brien horse to be stepped up to 1m4f
