Paddington Entries: What Next For Aidan O’Brien’s Coral-Eclipse Winner?

York Day One ITV Racing Tips

We look at the Paddington entries after the next big Aidan O’Brien superstar in the making landed the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown – his third Group One race and his sixth success on the bounce.

Paddington Entries: Next Stop Glorious Goodwood and The Sussex Stakes

Paddington got the better of the useful John Gosden mare Emily Upjohn in the 2023 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown on July 8th – (watch below) a win that took the Aidan O’Brien colt over the £1m total prize money barrier, while it was also his sixth win from 7 starts and his third at the highest level.

Having impressed in the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh back in May, Paddington improved again when slamming the English Guineas winner Chaldean by 3 3/4 lengths in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He was then upped to 1m2f for the first time in the Group One Coral Eclipse but saw out every inch of the trip well to give his popular handler his seventh win in the Sandown race and is now the winning-most trainer in the history of the race.

But, what next for Paddington?

The fast-improving 3 year-old holds an entry in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday 2nd August and has been put in by the best UK betting sites as the odds-on favourite at 8/11 with Paddy Power. If connections decide on a trip to the West Sussex track he could take on the likes of Inspiral, Triple Time and Modern Games, who also hold entries at this stage.

It would also been a drop back to a mile after winning the Eclipse over 1m2f last time out. However, many shrewd judges feel that, despite seeing out the longer trip at Sandown well, the ease back two furlongs to a mile will make Paddington harder to beat and this remains his best distance.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the Sussex Stakes five times, with his first win in the race the gutsy Giant’s Causeway in 2000 and his most recent The Gurkha in 2016. The Ballydoyle handler needs just two more wins in the race to equal the record haul of Sir Henry Cecil (7 wins).

Paddington Also Holds Entries In The Juddmonte International At York

Then, after the Sussex Stakes, the next race that Paddington holds an entry in is the Group One Juddmonte International Stakes on Wednesday 23rd August at York. If heading here it would also mean a step back up in trip to tackle 1m 2 1/2f for the first time. He’s currently at 7/2 with Paddy Power, but you feel a win in the Sussex Stakes prior to this race would see those odds vanish without trace.

He could meet the impressive Prince Of Wales’s Stakes winner Mostahdaf there, plus also take on Emily Upjohn, who he beat in the Coral-Eclipse, again.

Aidan O’Brien also has his Epsom and Irish Derby winner Auguste Rodin entered in the Juddmonte International Stakes, while the Irish handler will be looking for his seventh win in the race, plus, if successful, would become the most-winning trainer in the history of the race.

Could The Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe Also Be On The Agenda Later In The Year?

The Irish Champion Stakes on Sept 9th could be another target at the end of the season, but Paddington also has an entry in the Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday 1st October. The best UK bookmakers have him at 12/1 for Arc glory, but this would also been a big step up in trip to 1m4f and a leap into the unknown stamina-wise.

The last horse to win both the Eclipse and the Arc in the same season was Golden Horn in 2015, with Sea The Stars also landing the famous double in 2009.
