Ollie Watkins scored the winner as England beat Australia 1-0 and the Aston Villa striker jokingly apologised in his post-match interview for ‘stealing’ the goal from Jack Grealish.
England vs Australia Report
Gareth Southgate shocked England fans with his starting eleven for this evening’s fixture, as Levi Colwill made his senior debut and Jarrod Bowen, Sam Johnstone, Fikayo Tomori and Ollie Watkins all got rare starting opportunites.
England started strongly and could have been ahead within a matter of minutes, as both James Maddison and Watkins missed the ball from six-yards out, following a pin-point cross by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Watkins came close once again, as the Aston Villa star rounded the goalkeeper but saw his shot bounce off the post and left the England player frustrated.
England’s breakthrough came in the second-half, as some superb build up between Alexander Arnold and Jack Grealish led to the latter drilling the ball across the face of goal and Watkins was there to convert.
The ball from Manchester City’s winger appeared to be already going in, however, Watkins was there to make sure and England took the lead.
Australia showed promise throughout the match and gave England a tough test for the remainder of the match, but the Three Lions held on to the victory.

In a post match interview, Ollie Watkins was asked about the goal and whether or not it was already on target from Grealish. The Aston Villa striker jokingly apologised to his former club teammate.
Watkins said joyfully: “I think Jack’s gone to shoot and he’s dragged it. I don’t know if it’s going in, my first thought was that I took it off him. Look, like I said when you get the opportunity you have to grab it with both hands, so I had to take it off him even if it was going in.”
Watkins can be seen apologising to Grealish during the celebrations, with both sharing a laugh after combining to out England ahead.
