Sunday’s Old Roan Chase is one of the big jumping highlights this weekend as the National Hunt season starts to ramp up a few more notches. Last year we saw the Dan Skelton-trained Allmankind win the race, but who’ll be heading to Aintree this year?

Latest Runners For 2022 Aintree Old Roan Chase
At the latest declaration stage on Monday, there are 11 horses that have stood their ground ahead of Sunday’s Grade 2 Old Roan Chase. Aintree’s 2m4f contest is one of the first of the bigger National Hunt races of the season as the new campaign for the hedge hoppers starts to move up a few gears.
12 months ago, we saw the Dan Skelton-trained Allmankind beat Itchy Feet by a length (watch again below) – which was the first success in the race for the yard.
Eleven Runners Remain In 2022 Old Roan Chase
The 11 runners still holding an entry for Sunday’s Old Roan Chase are as follows.
- Beakstown (Dan Skelton)
- Captain Tom Cat (Dr Richard Newland)
- Coconut Splash (Evan Williams)
- Do Your Job (Michael Scudamore)
- Ga Law (Jamie Snowden)
- Hitman (Paul Nicholls)
- Il Ridoto (Paul Nicholls)
- Millers Bank (Alex Hales)
- One True King (Nigel Twiston-Davies)
- Riders Onthe Storm (Richard Hobson)
- Soldier Of Destiny (Jamie Snowden)
Trainer Dan Skelton Hopes To Follow-up Last Years Win
Having tasted success in the Old Roan Chase 12 months ago in 2021, trainer Dan Skelton will be hoping to maintain his stranglehold on the Aintree race with Beakstown his likely runner in 2022.
Beakstown was last seen running fifth in a handicap chase at Sandown back in April and prior to that recorded his sole chase win at Ayr in a Listed event.
Now aged 9, the Skelton runner isn’t getting any younger and with an official rating of 135 and only one career win over fences, you feel he’ll need to improve a bit to give Skelton his second Old Roan Chase winner.
The Paul Nicholls Yard Have Won The Old Roan Chase Three Times
The Paul Nicholls camp have bagged the Old Roan Chase three times in the past, with the first coming back in 2006 with a certain Kauto Star! They had to wait until 2015 (Sound Investment) for their next success in the race, while the talented front-runner Frodon (2018) provided them with their last win.
At the time of writing Nicholls has two entered – Il Ridoto and Hitman, who are both owned by the Giles, Hogarth, Mason and McGoff team.
Il Ridoto was last seen running third to another possible Old Roan Chase runner Do Your Job at Ayr and before that was 8th in the Grand Annual Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March (watch below).

The other possible Ditcheat entry, Hitman, would be the better Nicholls hope if running, being rated 159 and would be the top-rated in the line-up.
This 6 year-old was third in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury back in February and certainly wasn’t disgraced in the Grade One Marsh Chase here at Aintree at the Grand National meeting in April (watch below). If running on Sunday, you feel he’s the one to beat.
