Old Roan Chase Trends: The Key Stats To Look For
Plenty of key Old Roan Chase trends and stats to help find the winner of Sunday’s Aintree race – use these to find the best profiles of past winners and apply to the 2022 Old Roan Chase runners.
16 Of The Last 18 Winners Had Won Over 2m4f (Fences) Before
One of the key trends to start sees a massive 89% of recent winners having already won a race over fences over 2m4f (the Old Roan Chase trip). Yes, most will fit the bill here, but of those entered at the moment, Coconut Splash and Il Ridoto are the two that that are stepping up in trip and are yet to win over fences over 2m4f.
One True King is yet to win over 2m4f, but has won over 2m5 1/2f, so we know this Nigel Twiston-Davies runner will stay this distance okay.
No Real Age Trend For The Old Roan Chase
In recent year’s we’ve seen 10 of the last 18 winners aged 9 or older, but with a 5 and 6 year-old landing the prize in the last four years, then there isn’t really a firm age stat to take into this race at the moment.
With Smad Place winning in 2017 as a 10 year-old and Wishful Thinking in 2014 as an 11 year-old, then we’ve had winning ages ranging from 5 to 11 years-old in the last 8 runnings!
78% Of The Last 18 Winners Had Raced At Aintree Before
Having previous experience of the Aintree track is another plus – with 14 of the last 18 Old Roan Chase winner having raced at the Liverpool track in the past. Of the 11 entries, the fancied Do Your Job has run over hurdles at Aintree, while Hitman was a fine second in the Marsh Chase (watch below) here back in April.
Others to have run at Aintree before are Beakstown, Coconut Splash, Millers Back, Captain Tom Cat and Riders Onthe Storm.
With those that would be having their debuts here being – Il Ridoto, One True King, Soldier Of Destiny and Ga Law.
Of those that have run at the Merseyside venue, Millers Bank, Captain Tom Cat and Riders Onthe Storm are the three proven course and distance winners, which is an obvious plus.
56% Of The Last 18 Winners Ran At Aintree or Cheltenham Last Time Out
Not a massive trend but still one that is over 50% and can hopefully knock a few out. Looking at the early entries one of the main players – Hitman – gets a thumbs-up here having run a decent second in the Marsh Chase last time at Aintree.
The other one that ticks this stat is Riders Onthe Storm, who was last in action at Aintree too, when running midfield in the Topham Chase over the Grand National fences in April.
13 Of The Last 18 Winners Were Having Their First Run Of The Season
The new jumps season is hotting up, so it’s no really shock that a lot of the better-known horses haven’t been on the track as yet. This is backed up in this race over the years, with 72% having won this race on their seasonal reappearances.
Therefore, don’t be too worried if your fancy if coming into the race off a lay-off. The ones that HAVE has a recent run are Captain Tom Cat, who was second at Hexham at the end of September and One True King, who won at Market Rasen last month.
The Paul Nicholls Yard Have Won The Old Roan Chase Three Times
The Paul Nicholls stable have won the Old Roan Chase three times in the past, with their first coming back in 2006 with a little-known horse called Kauto Star! They had to wait until 2015 (Sound Investment) for their next Old Roan Chase win, while the talented front-runner Frodon (2018) gave them with their last success.
At the moment, Nicholls has two entered – Il Ridoto and Hitman, who are both owned by the Giles, Hogarth, Mason and McGoff partnership.
Il Ridoto @ 15/2 with 10bet was last seen running third to another possible Old Roan Chase runner Do Your Job at Ayr and before that was 8th in the Grand Annual Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March (watch below).

The other possible Ditcheat entry, Hitman @ 10/3 with 10bet, would be the better Nicholls hope if running, being rated 159 and would be the top-rated in the line-up.
This 6 year-old was third in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury back in February and certainly wasn’t disgraced in the Grade One Marsh Chase here at Aintree at the Grand National meeting in April (watch below). If heading to post on Sunday, you feel he’s the one the others have to aim at and has been put in with most bookies as one of the 2022 Old Roan Chase favourites.
