Karim Benzema confirmed Real Madrid’s worst fears following their final game of the season, with the Ballon D’or holder announcing his departure after a 14-year stint in the Spanish capital. With no suitable replacements currently in their ranks, the club have since been vocal about their bullish approach to the upcoming summer window, and they have now overtaken previous favourites Manchester United in the latest Harry Kane next club odds market.

Los Blancos have made no secret of their admiration for Harry Kane in the past, and have long seen England’s record goalscorer as the only viable, like-for-like replacement for Karim Benzema.

After emerging out from Cristiano’s Ronaldo’s sometimes overbearing shadow, Benzema has taken on the mantle as Madrid’s most potent weapon in recent years. This culminated in his most productive season yet last term, where his 59 goal involvements led them to a La Liga and Champions League double.

A topsy-turvy season this year in which they were brought back down to earth, albeit with a Copa Del Rey to show for it, has seen the Frenchman tail off slightly as he relinquished his Pichichi crown to league newcomer Robert Lewandowksi.

Whether that has had a bearing on his next career move is unclear, but a monstrous £100m-per-season proposal from Saudi Arabia appears to have been enough to turn his head as Al-Ittihad prepare for an imminent announcement.

And so, Real Madrid will be forced to enter the market for a new marksmen for first time in over a decade.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted Benzema’s exit came as a shock to the squad, but went on to confirm the club were already working to bring in a replacement with similar traits to the Frenchman’s all-round qualities.

Following Madrid’s final game of the season, the Italian said: “We need signings in attack and we will do that.

“We want to sign a striker that can score goals and link up well — so, a striker that plays football well.”

Reporting for the BBC, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has already confirmed Madrid’s intentions of signing Harry Kane.

Tottenham’s newly-crowned all-time record goalscorer has just one year left on his contract, and another trophy-less, turbulent season in north London has left those within the club uncertain of his future.

Chairman Daniel Levy will of course remain stubborn in his £100m estimation, particularly after a 30-goal season in the Premier League that has largely gone undetected in the presence of Erling Halaand.

With no prospects for Champions League football, many observers believe Kane’s 14-year Tottenham career has reached its climax.

While he is right at the top of Madrid’s list, a summer full of intense negotiations and navigating Levy’s bloated price tag may make it a difficult transfer to complete.

The club have compiled a list of striking options in case Kane stays put; Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Chelsea’s Kai Havertz, Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic and Inter Milan’s Lauturo Martinez are all believed to be on their radar.
