Aston Villa and Italy midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo has found himself entangled in a betting scandal that has taken a more serious turn.
It was earlier reported that Zaniolo, along with fellow Italy players Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Fagiolo, faced police questioning on allegations of breaching betting regulations.
La Repubblica reported that Zaniolo and Tonali maintained they restricted their wagers to blackjack and poker, steering clear of football betting. In contrast, Fagiolo’s extravagant betting activities, amounting to over a million Euros, could result in a three-year ban and a €25,000 fine.
Why Could Zaniolo’s Offences Be More Serious?
The gravity of Zaniolo’s situation appears more serious. He stands accused of violating Article 4 of law 401/98, hinting at a deeper involvement in organising and spreading betting illegally.
Dillinger News alleges that Zaniolo placed bets on a Coppa Italia match featuring former club Roma while he was sidelined due to injury. During that specific game, he was neither on the field nor included in the matchday squad.
In Zaniolo’s case, it is not just about betting on sports events, but the suspicion of orchestrating an illegal betting ring, involving even his mother, Francesca Costa, as suggested by Fabrizio Corona. This situation stands him out from his compatriots who are under investigation. Corona’s reports have also involved Roma’s Nicola Zalewski, though he has not yet faced formal investigation.
What Does This Mean For The Futures Of These Players?
The betting scandal has cast a dark cloud over the careers of these young Italian talents. It jeopardises their prospects in both club and international football.
While professional footballers are prohibited from betting on any sporting event, Zaniolo’s alleged offences are notably more severe. The question remains: did he merely place bets from the bench, or was he actively promoting illegal gambling? These charges may have far-reaching consequences, leaving Zaniolo’s promising career hanging in the balance.
As the investigation unfolds, Zaniolo and Tonali have been released from the Italy national team camp. They will not play in the Azzurri’s upcoming matches against Malta and England.
