As the debate for who Daniel Craig’s successor will be as 007 rumbles on, it is safe to say former favourite Idris Elba’s chances are looking bleak according to the latest next James Bond odds markets.
With Daniel Craig starring in his fifth and final instalment towards the back-end of 2021, producers are still yet to decide who will carry the torch going forward for this iconic role.
Idris Elba, perhaps best known for his role in ‘The Wire’, had long been thought of as the natural successor and led the markets until recently, saying he is now focused on reprising his role on the big screen as ‘Luther’, following the psychological thriller’s overwhelming success over the past decade. This has seen him drift as far as 16/1 in the current markets having been odds on last summer.
With several candidates now thrown into contention, we are taking a look at the latest betting developments in the next James Bond odds markets, to see they are any indicator as to who may take up the role.
Next James Bond Odds
- Aaron Taylor-Johnson – 13/8
- Henry Cavill – 2/1
- James Norton – 3/1
- Reage-Jean Page – 6/1
- Tom Hardy – 9/1
- Aidan Turner 14/1
- Callum Stevens – 14/1
- Jack Lowden – 16/1
- Idris Elba – 16/1
- Sope Dirisu – 16/1
- Callum Turner – 18/1
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is one of a handful on the current list who suits the Bond characters’ age, accent and dashing good looks. At 32 he is entering the stage of his career where landing a huge role like this may define his acting journey, and previous performances in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’, David Leitch’s ‘Bullet Train’ and the Tom Ford’s ‘Nocturnal Animals’ in which he was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, shows he is a worthy favourite and capable of taking on a role of this magnitude.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson responds to rumors that he will be the next James Bond.
“It’s flattering. You can have something really positive [written about you], but you can also have something really negative that can circulate.”

He has reportedly already carried out a screen test at Pinewood Studios, which was well received and impressed franchise head honcho Barbara Broccoli.
Elsewhere, Henry Cavill’s recent disappointment at being dropped by Warner Brothers in his role as Superman, coupled with the fact that he quit hugely popular Netflix fantasy ‘The Witcher’ over creative differences, means he is free to explore new roles without studios tying him down.
He is no stranger to spy films having starred in ‘Mission Impossible: Fallout’ and perhaps more notably ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E’, which possessed all the Bond-esque suave and sophistication to serve as a worthy audition for the vacant role.
James Norton has emerged as a serious contender to rival Cavill and Taylor-Johnson, after a captivating performance in the recent series finale of critically acclaimed drama ‘Happy Valley’.
The 37-year-old has also caught the attention in ITV’s ‘Granchester’ and gang drama ‘McMafia’, but recently admitted that he is yet to receive a call from any of the attached producers.
A favoured outsider who has emerged as a possible candidate in recent weeks is Jack Lowden, who has received critical acclaim for his portrayal of infamous criminal Kenneth Noye in new BBC series ‘The Gold’.
Commenting on recent rumours linking his to the role of Bond, he said: “It’s quite bizarre because it feels like Daniel Craig is still Bond so even as a fan, even to sort of be contemplating anyone else playing him, I mean, I don’t envy them, how they’re gonna replace him because I still think he is [Bond]. He was mine. That’s who I grew up with.”
