Michael Smith has taken home a hat-trick of trophies in the PDC Annual Awards, including winning PDC Player of the Year.

Michael Smith takes home multiple PDC awards after historic 2022

In March 2022, Michael Smith was pipped by one leg to a first ever major title in the UK Open against Dutchman Danny Noppert, losing 11-10 on the day.

In October, Smith lost an eighth consecutive major final to Ross Smith in the European Championships, falling to an 11-8 defeat in Dortmund, Germany.

The following month, the 32-year-old spun it all around to win the Grand Slam and mark a debut major triumph against Nathan Aspinall in the final through a dominant 16-5 blowout.

Smith earned the attention of the globe after winning the 2023 World Championships, hitting arguably the greatest nine-darter of all-time in the final against Michael van Gerwen.

As part of the 2022 PDC Annual Awards, the St Helens-born star was named PDC Player of the Year, Selco Fans’ Player of the Year and PDPA Players’ Player of the Year.

Smith delighted with recent success and aiming even higher in 2023

Smith said: “To pick up three awards shows I’m doing something right!”

“At the minute I’m on a massive rollercoaster and I’m loving every minute. I’ve put so much hard work in and I’m getting rewarded for it now.

“The fans’ award is one of the special ones, because they have lived it with me. They have felt the heartache I’ve felt, and they felt the joy when I won it. It feels really special.

“I won the Players’ Player of the Year in 2019, so to win my second one, I must be one of the players that people enjoy watching!

“I’m lost for words really. To win awards like this is amazing, but the hard work starts now. That was for 2022, and now I’ve got to work even harder in 2023.”
