Top Irish trainer Willie Mullins has the hot Melbourne Cup 2023 favourite Vauban and you can get his, and owner Rich Ricci’s, thoughts on Vauban here.
However, in the interview with Aussie broadcaster Jim McGrath, Mullins also spoke about his other runner – Absurde – and feels the horse is in great shape, with a lovely light weight (8-9) and went onto say if he was an each-way Melbourne Cup punter – he’d not be afraid to back Absurde.
Mullins told Jim McGrath on the Nick Luck Daily Podcast “Watching the times (Vauban in the track over here in work) and I saw him this morning and our two horses are in great shape. And re Absurde, he’s in as good a form as Vauban and has a lovely light weight, so for each-way punters I’d wouldn’t be afraid.”
We last saw Absurde winning the York Ebor Handicap under Frankie Dettori (watch below) and even though he was 7 1/2 lengths behind his stablemate Vauban at Royal Ascot in June, has since run twice and that recent York success was a clear sign he’s improving on the level.
That was only his ninth career run on the flat and has now won three and been in the first two seven times.
It’s also interesting that when quizzed, Vauban’s owner Rich Ricci also said he feared the other Mullins runner – Absurde – and that the “favourites don’t win all the time.”
We also know Absurde will stay the Melbourne Cup 2m trip, having won over 2m4f over hurdles, and with Dettori suspended and not able to ride, the Mullins camp have turned to Aussie pilot Zac Purton.
