Real Sociedad defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi is set to hold out on any transfer decision in order to weigh up his options outside of La Liga.
Arsenal keeping tabs on transfer target Zubimendi
Arsenal are the English side with the most firm interest in signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, but Manchester United and Liverpool could yet provide competition.
Erik ten Hag admitted on Thursday that United have begun work on summer transfer targets, and we revealed earlier this week that Zubimendi is one of the early names on their radar as they target five summer signings.
But Liverpool could yet become an interesting option – especially if they land Xabi Alonso as their next manager. Alonso used to play for Real Sociedad, and Zubimendi has previously highlighted him as a personal icon.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta also has connections to Real Sociedad, and spent a brief spell at the club between 2004 and 2005 during his early playing career.
Zubimendi Unsure On Premier League Transfer
According to sources in Spain, 25-year-old Zubimendi has so far refused to seriously contemplate the prospect of a move to Arsenal even though he is aware of their interest.
It is understood that he is seriously considering whether the Premier League is a suitable destination for himself first, and needs to be fully convinced that that a move would suit his playing style.
The waiting game will suit Liverpool though, as they contemplate Jurgen Klopp’s successor. They have the potential to sign another midfielder, and while Zubimendi has been more of a watching brief up to now, that may change if Alonso was to be appointed.
For now the Gunners remain favourites, and they are ready to commit to making changes in the summer with the possibility of Thomas Partey and Emile Smith Rowe both being moved on.
