Manchester United’s chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League have taken a huge fit, following a 3-1 defeat to Brighton.

Match Report

United started the game well and were almost ahead as Rasmus Hojlund was inches away from scoring on his Old Trafford debut.

However, it was Brighton who struck first and opened the scoring, as Danny Welbeck placed the ball into the bottom left corner.

Erik ten Hag’s side thought they had equalised just before the half-time whistle, as Rasmus Hojlund poked the ball home. However, after a VAR check Marcus Rashford had been deemed to have run the ball out of play.

As the second-half started, Brighton continued to dominate proceedings and were rewarded as Pascal Gross doubled the Seagulls’ lead – with a tidy finish.

Things went from bad to worse for the home side, as Joao Pedro struck the ball into the top left corner and caused United supporters to flood the exits at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils did find a consolation goal straight after going 3-0 down, as Hannibal Mejbri found the bottom right corner from distance.

United failed to create for the remainder of the match and Brighton ran out as 3-1 victors – putting more pressure on Erik ten Hag.

Will United Finish In The Top Four?

The Red Devils finished third in the Premier League last season, whilst also winning the Carabao Cup in what was successful opening campaign for Erik ten Hag.

However, the Dutchman has had a poor start this year, losing to Arsenal, Spurs and Brighton, which has not been helped with off the field controversies.

His side will look to bounce back in the Champions League on Wednesday as they begin their Group Stage run against Bayern Munich. They will then travel to Burnley next Saturday, in hopes of finding only their third win of the season.

Brighton, on the other hand, will be looking to build on an impressive start to the season, as they welcome Bournemouth to the Amex on the Sunday.
