Alejandro Garnacho has given his verdict on whose overhead kick was better – his or Wayne Rooney’s.

Back in 2011, in a crucial Manchester derby, Wayne Rooney scored one of the greatest, and most unforgettable, goals in Premier League history – that overhead kick in a 2-1 Manchester United win against Manchester City.

Then, in November 2023, history repeated itself as Alejandro Garnacho scored a near-identical overhead kick in a 3-0 Manchester United victory over Everton.

Since the 19-year-old’s strike bulged the back of Jordan Pickford’s net, debate has been rife over which overhead kick was better.

Well now Alejandro Garnacho has had his say.

Garancho On Who Scored The Best Overhead Kick

In a Q&A with Sky Sports, Alejandro Garnacho was asked whose overhead kick was better, his against Everton earlier in the season or Wayne Rooney’s against Manchester City in 2011.

The 19-year-old was diplomatic in his response, saying: “Too many people ask for this but I think the Rooney [overhead kick] was more important because it was against Manchester City, so the moment is more important.

“But the technique, probably mine.”

The interviewer then turned to a smirking Kobbie Mainoo who explained that he’d seen the young Argentinian score an overhead kick during their time in the youth system: “Like he was saying before, we played together in the [Under] 17’s and he scored a similar goal.

“So when I’ve seen the ball go up [against Everton], I thought ‘He’s gonna go for that’. But it’s still surprising and crazy to see it go in on the pitch.”

This week, Wayne Rooney also weighed in on the debate. Speaking on BBC’s coverage of Manchester United’s FA Cup fixture against Nottingham Forest, Rooney said: “I think Garnacho’s was better,” he added. “I think Garnacho’s goal was a better goal, but I think doing it against Manchester City was a better game.”
