Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has given his thoughts on the recent controversy surrounding Marcus Rashford.

Marcus Rashford Controversy

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has been in the spotlight for the wrong reasons over the weekend.

The 26-year-old reported ill for training on Friday, just hours after allegedly being spotted at a nightclub in Belfast on Thursday evening.

As a result, the England international was omitted from Manchester United’s squad for their FA Cup fixture against Newport County, which they subsequently won 4-2.

The Red Devils released a statement to explain Rashford’s absence from the travelling squad, which said: “Marcus Rashford not well enough to be in the squad for Newport following illness; he has stayed at Carrington to train as he recovers.”

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was asked about the incident following the Red Devils’ FA Cup victory, to which he replied: “He reported ill and the rest is an internal matter.”

When asked to elaborate on his comments ten Hag remained tight-lipped, saying: “It is an internal matter. As I said, we will deal with it. I will deal with it.”

Rio Ferdinand On Rashford Controversy

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has had his say on the controversy surrounding Marcus Rashford and believes the academy graduate should show more leadership.

“Right now Marcus should be the guy that’s leading the team.

“There’s a lot of noise around the club. You’re one of the experienced players now, keep that noise down.

“That’s your duty. You’re one of the leaders now, like it or not. Your age and the time you’ve been there, you’re one of the leaders.

“And again, I think you’ve got to be aware enough that when you’re not doing well as a club, as a team and you’re not hitting the standards that we know you’re about, personally you’ve got to be aware man.”
