Graham Potter had a horrific time with Chelsea last season that ended with him getting the sack seven months after being hired for the managerial position. Rumours are now circulating that Manchester United could ditch Erik Ten Hag for Potter under one condition.
Potter to Manchester United?
Graham Potter is high on Manchester United’s radar and could be the new manger of the club once INEOS are running football operations – if they decide to part company with Erik ten Hag.
At this moment in time the current heads at the club have no plans to sack Ten Hag despite poor performances.
Who are INEOS?
INEOS are a global healthcare manufacture. They produce chemicals, polymers, oil and gas and are the fourth largest chemical company in the world. Jim Ratcliffe is the chairman of INEOS and he is interested in owning 25% of Manchester United. The bid is around £1.3bn. The 25% would see him gain control of football operations within the club.
Ratcliffe’s INEOS runs Ligue 1 side Nice. Within four years, there have been five managerial changes. That’s a fact that not many Manchester United fans would want ahead of their involvement with the club.
Reaction to the Potter news
Over at talkSport, Simon Jordan has been speaking on the matter and has warned Manchester United not to go with Graham Potter in regard to his horrendous time he had at Chelsea.
He said: “To put Graham Potter in the conversation is stretching it a little bit. What we’re doing is deciphering the relevance and coherency of such thinking. You couldn’t cope with Chelsea, you think you can cope with Man United? You think you can cope with that problem?
“It’s still a beast of a football club and the step up from Brighton to Chelsea was too much for him. It was the wrong decision and you can point towards the ownership model being all new and all the problems that Boehly brings but you still should have been able to cut through and build a side of some significance.
Potter’s time at Chelsea
In 31 games with the club, Potter lost 11 games, drew eight and won 12. The club were in 12th place when the sacked him which is a far cry from their top four finish the previous season.
Potter took over in September 2022 as Chelsea sacked Thomas Tuchel despite winning the Champions League with them in 2021.
Jordan added: “I think that possibly if you got Potter into Manchester United and he was given a fair headwind and an even platform to build form and not huge expectations… Yeah fine, but that’s not Manchester United is it?
“If the owners of Manchester United think that putting Graham Potter into the hot seat would be a good process, they should sleep on it.
“And if they wake up in the morning and think it’s still a good idea then they should go back to bed.”
When could the INEOS bid come through?
The deal was announced in November so the official confirmation could come within the New Year. Manchester United only have two games scheduled in January which could give Manchester United enough time to find a suitable replacement for Ten Hag if they wish to terminate his contract.
