Manchester United’s away record against the rest of the top nine makes for grim reading, as they were condemned to yet another winless result on the road in midweek.
Alexis Mac Allister, who looks increasingly likely to swap the south coast for Liverpool in the summer, moved ahead of Kaoru Mitoma as Brighton’s outright top scorer this season.
The World Cup winner dispatched an emphatic 99th minute penalty into the top corner to hand the Seagulls a first ever league double over Manchester United, and in doing so boosted their lofty ambitions for a top four spot.
They also inflicted another bruising winless game for United away from home against top nine opposition. Despite sitting comfortably in the Champions League places, four above Liverpool and five ahead of Brighton, Erik Ten Hag will be increasingly concerned at their dismal record on the road against the rest of the top half.
1 – Manchester United have picked up just one point from eight away matches against sides currently 9th and above in the Premier League this season (W0 D1 L7), the joint-fewest of any side on the road against such opposition in 2022-23 (level with Nottingham Forest). Their only solitary point across their eight fixtures came at the tail end of April, where they let a first-half two-goal lead slip against a down-on-their-luck Tottenham side.
Perhaps more concerning is the lack of defensive stability away from Old Trafford – across their eight contests against top nine opposition, they have conceded 28 goals, which averages at 3.5 goals per game.
Nevertheless, they still rank in the top five when isolating results away from home, winning as many as they have lost (7). Their form at Old Trafford has undoubtedly been their saving grace in the pursuit of European football, dropping just nine points from a possible 48.
