Manchester United have reportedly added Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio to their list of defensive transfer targets ahead of the window opening in January.
Erik ten Hag has had to deal with several injury problems within his Manchester United defence thus far this term, and this was highlighted last time out against Brentford when he was forced to start with the centre-back pairing of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans.
This came as Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane were forced to sit the clash out through injury, with the former facing a good few months on the sidelines, whilst the latter should return to the fold after the international window.
Amid their defensive struggles, the Dutch boss has drawn up a catalogue of potential defensive transfer targets ahead of the January window, and according to Fabrizio Romano – Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio is a name that has been added to that list.
“Understand Manchester United have also added Gonçalo Inacio to their list of centre-backs now being monitored/scouted.” Romano tweeted on Tuesday morning.
“Antonio Silva, Jean-Clair Todibo and Tapsoba remain in the list. No final decision now, it will take time; based on player skills, reports, price and more.”

Inacio has been on the radar of the majority of Europe’s elite clubs, with the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle, Arsenal, Liverpool, PSG and more previously showing a reported interest.
The 22-year-old has been an ever-present figure in the Sporting defence over the past few seasons, and has also become a full-fledged senior international for Portugal.
Inacio has played in all 10 of Sporting’s competitive matches this term, featuring for the entire 90 minutes in all 10 as his side sit top of the Portuguese first division – one point clear of bitter rivals Benfica.
Whether the Red Devils follow through on their interest remains to be seen, but Inacio’s experience at such a young age would provide Ten Hag with a fantastic option alongside Martinez and Varane, as well as further depth along the defensive line.
