Manchester City’s title odds have been slashed to 5/4 after their crucial 2-0 victory against Champions League chasing Newcastle.

Pep Guardiola’s side came into the game five points behind their title rivals, Arsenal and they got off to the best possible start. Phil Foden returned to the starting XI after impressing in the FA Cup and his beautiful solo goal gave his side the lead.

Newcastle faced the same problems that they have been troubled with since the beginning of the year. Being the lowest scoring team in the league since January 1st and in the opening half chances were few and far between for the Magpies.

Their best chance fell to Callum Wilson, who from 6-yards out missed the ball when any contact would have been enough to level things. The returning Nick Pope managed kept the away side in it and City went into the break with the lead.

Eddie Howe’s side started the second half confidently and kept City’s chances to a minimum. The Newcastle boss made three changes around the 60th minute, Alexander Isak, Allan Saint-Maximin, and Joe Willock.

These changes brought some energy to the Toon and they nearly levelled things through the substitute Isak but he was smothered by the determined Ederson. But the bubble was burst as Bernado Silva doubled the hosts lead with a superb finish.

After the second goal neither side looked likely to score again and Manchester City managed to control the final twenty minutes to take all three points.

Can City close the gap on Arsenal?

The current Premier League champions have closed the gap to two points following their victory over Newcastle, with Arsenal playing Bournemouth this afternoon. Guardiola’s side will be hoping the Gunners drop points, with Manchester United also still in contention.

City’s next league match is against mid-table Crystal Palace and the Blue side of Manchester will be looking to continue their recent run. The Eagles have started 2023 poorly but will not be looking to drop down into the relegation places.

Premier League winners odds:

Arsenal @ 24/23

Man City @ 5/4

Man United @ 16/1

Spurs @ 500/1
