Rumours have been few and far between for the champions as we approach the winter window, but the latest Manchester City January transfer odds indicate the club have their sights fixed on unearthing young Argentine talent once more.

Little over £205 million was spent on four new arrivals in the summer, which may leave Manchester City tightening the purse strings somewhat in January.

Man City transfer news has been littered with rumours of departures rather than arrivals, with Kalvin Phillips to Juventus chief among them.

However, just as they did in January 2022 with now-established forward Julian Alvarez, it looks as if the treble winners will turn to their scouting network in Argentina to root out another budding young gem.

Phillips looks almost certain to depart given Pep Guardiola’s hesitancy to hand him minutes, and the latest City transfer odds for January suggest a midfield replacement will be their priority.

Manchester City Transfer Odds Suggest Teenage Duo From Argentina Are Their Chief Targets

Valentin Barco and Claudio Echeverri

It could be argued that Manchester City’s weakest, or perhaps most shallow position, remains the left side of defence.

According to reports coming out of Argentina, Boca Juniors’s much-heralded attacking full-back Valentin Barco has been touted as the perfect remedy for this lack of depth. City are thought to be chief among a host of interest parties across Europe, and his current contract at Boca expires in less than a year, meaning he could be available for less than £10m in January.

Several reports have floated the idea that Barco could be loaned to Championship leaders Leicester City upon his arrival, where Guardiola’s former assistant Enzo Maresca could provide the perfect conditions for development.

The latest Fabrizio Romano transfer news also tips 2006-born River Plate midfielder Claudio Echeverri to join City this winter, although he claims they will face fierce competition from fellow admirers Chelsea and Barcelona.

Along with Real Madrid’s newest Galactico Endrick, and PSG’s teenage sensation Warren Zaire-Emery, he was named as one of the best players born in 2006 by the Guardian.

Joao Palhinha and Douglas Luiz

Both Fulham’s Joao Palhinha and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz are about as attractive as midfield options go right now, with Arsenal transfer rumours continually linking them with both.

Any and every team in need of midfield reinforcements are linked with the pair, although neither club will be willing to sell their prized assets for any less than £60m, particularly at such a pivotal moment in the season.

Unlikely would be the word, but then again we saw Chelsea drop a world record fee last winter for a midfielder, so very little comes as surprise in the market.

Miguel Gutierrez

Former Real Madrid left-back Miguel Gutierrez is also an attractive option at left-back alongside Barco, and any negotiations for his services will be made much easier by the fact his club – La Liga leaders Girona – are controlled by Manchester City’s ownership group.

Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane

As their 10/1 prices suggest, it would be an almighty shock if Bayern Munich let two of their most effective players leave in January.

Jamal Musiala was recently listed among the world’s most valuable players by CIES, so it seems unlikely City would have the capital to facilitate such a deal.

Rumours of a return to Manchester for Leroy Sane continues to do the rounds, and his evolution from the explosive wide player we saw exit City three years ago, to being a master in tight spaces makes him an attractive target.
