Attempting to emulate bitter rivals Manchester United by winning only the second treble by an English side is perhaps the apposite narrative heading into this weekend, but it isn’t the only record they are looking to mimic. An unbeaten Manchester City side in Europe this year can equal a record set by, you guessed it, Manchester United 15 years ago.
Manchester City Unbeaten in Europe This Season
Manchester United’s only hope of their city rivals failing to emulate their untouched 24-year treble record now rests on this weekend, after falling to defeat in last weekend’s FA Cup final.
Inter Milan will of course have a big say in proceedings despite entering the contest as heavy underdogs, and manager Simone Inzaghi holds a remarkable record in cup competitions have won seven consecutive finals whilst at the helm.
It does, however, appear to be an incredibly tall order given fellow finalists Manchester City have lost just seven games across their 60 competitive matches this term.
The tantalising prospect of winning Europe’s elite club competition has so far evaded the club throughout their history, but so many narratives are feeding into what could be a momentous occasion for City; a first ever Champions League. Pep Guardiola winning for the first time since leaving Barcelona Completing a treble. Emulating bitter rivals Manchester United – there are countless stories to be finished.

A potential record that hasn’t garnered too much attention is one that will also get under the skin of United fans, having been the most recent team to go unbeaten across an entire Champions League campaign.
If the Cityzens avoid defeat on Saturday, they can become the first Champions League winners since Manchester United in 2007/08 to not taste defeat.
That is taking into account the current format of the competition, with AC Milan and Ajax having achieved that feat in the mid 1990’s when less teams features.
It is also worth noting that Bayern Munich did indeed go the full campaign unbeaten in 2020, but the latter stages only consisted of one leg ties due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Nevertheless, there is no denying Manchester City have been by far and away the most potent side on the continent this season, and have rarely, if ever, looked like slipping to defeat.
This is perhaps best reflected by the fact they have spent the least time behind in the tournament so far, trailing for a grand total of just 82 minutes, which according to Opta, works out at around 7% of their campaign.
