Manchester City vs Liverpool has emerged as one of the greatest ever Premier League rivalries and since Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have been at the helm, the matches between the two are usually not for the faint hearted.
Two of England’s finest go toe-to-toe again on Saturday so here at SportsLens, we’ve taken a look back at five Premier Premier League classics in the Guardiola and Klopp era.
Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City (2016/17)
The first Manchester City vs Liverpool meeting in the Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp era might not have been a classic in reflection of the scoreline, but it was the very beginning of a great rivalry that would ensue.
Gigi Wijnaldum scored the only goal of the game after 8 minutes at Anfield, giving Klopp the advantage over Guardiola in the Premier League era. The Reds manager duly celebrated by pumping his chest alongside his players in front of the home crowd.
Manchester City 5-0 Liverpool (2017/18)
Pep Guardiola got his revenge in style as Manchester City tore Liverpool apart 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium the following season. Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane each hit a brace with Sergio Aguero earlier opening the scoring.
Sadio Mane was sent off for Jurgen Klopp’s side as City went on to claim a historical title later that season, becoming the first and only side in Premier League history to register 100 points in a single season.
Liverpool 4-3 Manchester City (2017/18)
It was soon to be advantage again to Jurgen Klopp after his Liverpool side avenged the 5-0 thrashing from earlier in the 2017/18 campaign by beating Manchester City in a 4-3 classic at Anfield.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah were the Reds scorers that day and it was also Pep Guardiola’s first Premier League defeat of the season. The rivalry between the teams and manager was really starting to intensify.
Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool (2021/22)
Many had billed April’s clash at the Etihad as a potential title-decider with Manchester City and Liverpool both vying for the Premier League trophy once again, and the epic 2-2 draw did not disappoint.
City would go on to be champions that season but the game itself really highlighted and demonstrated just how brilliant both sets of teams, and managers, were. Despite their previous differences, it was almost like Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp had come to recognise and respect each other in a way nobody knew possible.
Manchester City 4-1 Liverpool (2022/23)
Manchester City hit Liverpool for four in April 2023, on their way to a historical treble and they cruised past the Reds without Erling Haaland.
Jurgen Klopp’s side took an early lead through Mo Salah, but this only seemed to awaken Pep Guardiola’s treble-chasers. Julian Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish sealed the points for the Cityzens. Who do you think will win this weekend? The best UK betting sites make City the match favourites at 3/4, with the draw 7/2 and Liverpool at 7/2.
