Luton vs Chelsea Key Stats

Chelsea returned to winning ways in midweek with a late 2-1 win in a London derby against Crystal Palace, following on from their bitterly disappointing 2-1 defeat away to Wolves on Christmas Eve.

That win saw the Blues claw their way back into the top half of the table, level on points with 11th place Wolves and 12th place Bournemouth heading into the final gameweek of the calendar year.

The Hatters on the other hand, are enjoying their best spell of form since being promoted to the Premier League. Rob Edwards’ side have won two successive matches for the first time this term, besting Newcastle 1-0 before coming from behind to beat Sheffield United 3-2 last time out.

Despite those two victories, Luton still find themselves among the relegation places. Occupying 18th, the Bedfordshire-based side are just a point adrift of safety, but boast an advantage over those around them in the table as they have a game in hand to play.

Chelsea Unbeaten Against Luton Since 1991

Luton have only won six games fewer than Chelsea from each of their meetings throughout history, however their last victory over the West Londoners came way back in 1991 where they ran out as 2-0 winners in a First Division match.

But since that day at Kenilworth Road, the pair have met just four times, with three of those coming in the last three years. This is because both sides have been on opposite trajectories since then, with Luton spending time in all of the top five divisions in England, while Chelsea have remained in the first tier.

Regardless, the Blues have won all four of their meetings since the defeat in 1991. The first three came in the FA Cup in 1994, 2021 and 2022, with their most recent triumph coming in the reverse fixture earlier on in the season.

Chelsea were comfortable 3-0 victors in that one back in August, as Raheem Sterling netted his first and only brace of the campaign, and Nicolas Jackson grabbed his first competitive goal for the club.

Luton In Strong Form Heading Into The Tie

As previously alluded to, Luton are in good form having won their last two league matches. Of course, those wins came over relegation rivals Sheffield United and massively out-of-form Newcastle, but that comes as no mean feat.

It is actually the Hatters’ best spell of form since being promoted to the first tier, with their last two game winning streak coming seven months ago in the Championship play-offs against Sunderland and Coventry.

Undoubtedly though, it will take something special for them to extend this winning run to three successive matches – something that they last achieved in the top flight back in December 1991, the third game of which actually came against Chelsea.
