Luis Diaz could move away from Liverpool in the summer, if they decide to extend Mohamed Salah’s contract.

Why would Diaz move?

Financial fair play is a large part of the reason. Salah’s contract is around £350k-a-week and renewing it would have a massive effect on Liverpool’s finances.

Last season, they spent £147million on rebuilding their squad. They only made around £52m in selling players.

Current FFP rules state that clubs that are not in a European competition can lose up to £105m over a three-year period. Teams that are in Europe can only lose up to £68.5m.

Four Premier League teams have been penalised or are under investigation for breaking FFP rules in the past year. More and more clubs are getting caught out and it’s becoming a huge priority to have finances under control.

Newcastle are another team that will likely have to sell important players in the summer transfer window to keep within FFP rules.

Where will Diaz move to?

Liverpool signed Diaz from Porto in 2022 for £50m. Since then, he’s become a staple in the Liverpool squad and has done a great job of replacing Sadio Mane. Diaz has 34 G/A in 82 appearances for the Reds.

Diaz has gained a lot of interest from clubs in La Liga including Barcelona. This would likely be his next destination if Liverpool were going to offload the Colombian.

Salah will turn 32 in the summer whilst Diaz just turned 26. However, Salah is still producing incredible stats.

The Egyptian has scored 19 and assisted ten so far this season. He is also Liverpool’s fifth all time leading goalscorer. It’s clear to see why renewing Salah’s contract would be a priority for Liverpool.

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour discussed the matter on talkSPORT, he said: “Well, if they can keep Salah, certainly. You’ve always go to look at the financial side of it now.

“Clubs will have to start doing deals now just to keep it ticking along and you might have to lose certain players in certain teams which you probably don’t want to lose. But, you’d rather lose him than you would Salah, if you know what I mean.

“There’ll be a lot of clubs after him, definitely but I think Jurgen Klopp is leaving, whoever gets the job is in a decent position because after seeing all the youngsters out there performing at the moment for Liverpool, the academy’s coming through.

“If you can sign Mo Salah and [Virgil] Van Dijk and really key players [down to new contracts], that experience in the team as well, then it’s only going one way for any new manager.

“It’s in a good position at the moment but Diaz I’m sure, whether he will go to LaLiga or stay in the Premier League is a big matter, but I’m sure lots of clubs will be in for him.”
