Use our Long Distance Hurdle trends and stats to help find the winner of Friday’s big Newbury race, where trainer Nicky Henderson is trying to win the prize for a second year in-a-row – this time with his talented mare Marie’s Rock.
Marie’s Rock Heads A Field Of Just Five For Friday’s Long Distance Hurdle
The six-time champion jumps trainer Nicky Henderson landed the Newbury Long Distance Hurdle 12 months ago with his 10 year-old Champ and is back for more this Friday with the hot favourite Marie’s Rock.
Champ’s win last year provided Henderson with his fourth Long Distance Hurdle success, with his first coming back in 1995 with Conquering Leader and then adding Bacchanal in 2002 and Duc de Regniere in 2008.
Marie’s Rock has been put in as the clear favourite with the best UK horse racing betting sites as the talented mare looks to win for the eighth time over hurdles.
In the last 21 runnings of the Long Distance Hurdle, we’ve seen 12 winning favourites (57%).
She was last seen running a fine second in the Grade One Liverpool Hurdle (watch below) at Aintree, which was her first try beyond 3m. Despite not winning, the 8 year-old stayed the trip well and with longer distances on the agenda this season looks the sort to improve again now campaigned over further.
The Long Distance Hurdle A Good Stayers’ Hurdle Guide
In the last 21 years, we’ve seen seven Long Distance Hurdle winners go onto land the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and Marie’s Rock is currently at 14/1 for that Grade One next March with the best online gambling sites.
The last horse to win both the Long Distance Hurdle and the Stayers’ Hurdle in the same season was Thistlecrack in 2015/16.

2019 Long Distance Hurdle Winner Paisley Park Back For More At 11
This Friday’s Long Distance Hurdle also sees the 2019 winner Paisley Park back in action at the grand old age of 11.
Connections of the Emma Lavelle-trained veteran are letting him race on into his twilight years so is clearly still loving his racing at home. He was also a gallant runner-up to Champ in this race 12 months ago – beaten just a neck (watch below).
While he also defied his age last season to win the Long Walk Hurdle, which was run at Kempton, by an easy 4 1/2 lengths.
Friday’s run will be Paisley Park’s 27th outing over hurdles. And having finished in the top three 21 times (11 wins) will still have his supporters, despite his age.
Dashel Drasher Another Older-Timer In Friday’s Long Distance Hurdle
The 10 year-old-Dashel Drasher returned at the start of November to run a fair third at Wetherby in the bet365 Hurdle and should be spot-on for Friday’s Newbury race after that.
This Jeremy Scott horse has won six of his 14 starts over hurdles and is as consistent as they come. Having only been out of the first twice over the smaller obstacles and will be the top-rated 2023 Long Distance Hurdle in the field.
Regular jockey Rex Dingle rides and the form of his 3/4 length second in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival is rock solid (watch below). The only concern is that Dashel Drasher is now winless from this last six races, with his last success coming over a year ago at Aintree.
Five-Time Long Distance Hurdle Winner Paul Nicholls Pins Hope On Hugos New Horse
14-time champion jumps trainer Paul Nicholls has won Newbury’s Long Distance Hurdle five times and they’ve all been owned by the Stewart Family. Four of those wins were with the popular Big Buck’s, who also landed four Stayers’ Hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival – their other winner was Celestial Halo in 2013.
Nicholls and the Stewart clan are back for more on Friday too. This time with a runner called Hugos New Horse but being rated 132 has a massive 27lbs to find with Dashel Drasher and 25lbs with the former winner Paisley Park.
Hugos New Horse was also seen last running a poor 15th (of 20) at Cheltenham at the end of October as a beaten favourite so will need to bounce back from that.
