Liverpool’s late equaliser puts an end to Manchester City’s remarkable winning run at home.

Man City had won their previous 23 games at the Etihad across all competitions. Pep Guardiola’s side were just one win away from matching a record that has stood for 131 years.

It is the first time City have failed to win at home since December 2022, when they drew 1-1 with Everton.

City’s incredible winning run started in January 2023, in a 4-0 FA Cup mauling over Chelsea. Since then, they have scored 78 goals and conceded just 12.

The result means Sunderland’s 1892 team still hold the record for most successive home wins, with 24. The historic Sunderland side were managed by Tom Watson, who won three league titles with the club between 1889 and 1896.

Interestingly, Watson would go on to become Liverpool’s first ever title-winning manager—the same club that ended Man City’s quest to beat the record.

After Erling Haaland’s record-breaking opener in the first half, City looked like they were going to see the game out and equal Sunderland’s historic record.

However, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 79th-minute equaliser against the run of play helped Liverpool snatch a point at the Etihad. The goal came just 26 seconds after Alisson made a terrific save to deny Haaland at the other end.

The draw means City remain top of the Premier League, at the time of writing, a point ahead of Liverpool. Arsenal have the opportunity to overtake both sides with a win at Brentford.
