Darwin Nunez has been a talking point for his lack of goals and not being able to convert simple chances, but after his performance against Fulham, he surprised a few fans with this statistic.
What is the statistic?
Nunez’s two assists against Fulham meant that he now leads for most assists in the Liverpool team this season. He’s overtaken Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah who both had nine. Nunez now stands on 10 and he has the chance to strengthen his lead with Salah at AFCON and Alexander-Arnold out with a knee injury.
Is Nunez better on the wing?
Liverpool fans have been quick to point out how influential Nunez has been off the left wing. The Uruguayan was a substitute against Fulham but he came on and changed the game with his pace off the left.
He creates chances for more clinical finishers like Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota. Having Nunez play off the left instead of centrally gives Liverpool a good alternative option when they’re struggling for goals. His pace is a nightmare for defenders and that has given Liverpool the advantage going into the second leg at Fulham.
Nunez over Diaz?
Luis Diaz is always a first name on the Liverpool team sheet but he isn’t having his usual impact on games. Diaz just has five goals and one assist in all competitions.
Nunez’s numbers are much more productive with eight goals and ten assists.
In attack, Liverpool do have a healthy option and it’s an area in which they can experiment on. The right wing position which is usually occupied by Salah has been vacated due to AFCON. Harvey Elliott has played their the past couple of games but isn’t having quite the same impact that he does when he plays in central midfield.
There’s also not many left-footed players in the Liverpool squad so the right wing position will remain a tricky one.
Gakpo is a nailed on striker. Jota and Nunez have proven they can play on the left wing and centrally. Diaz has only ever played on the left wing. They will have opportunities to experiment with this and to find the best positions for everyone in the months ahead.
