Liverpool vs Manchester United (0-0) Report: Goalless Stalemate On Merseyside

Both sides came into this one off the back of defeats in Europe, with Liverpool narrowly losing out 2-1 to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League. Just a day prior to that, Manchester United were eliminated from the Champions League after losing to Bayern Munich and finishing bottom of their group.

That followed on from a bitterly disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth for Erik ten Hag’s side, while their Merseyside counterparts were in excellent domestic form – without a defeat since narrowly losing out 2-1 to Tottenham back in September.

The Reds started on the front foot but failed to capitalise on the opportunities afforded to them, with Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez struggling to properly test Andre Onana in the visitors’ goal.

This was the main storyline of the first 45 minutes, seeing the pair head into the half time break with no goals to separate them.

It was a similar story in the second period with the majority of the chances going the way of the hosts. Perhaps the best effort of the match came in the 66th minute, when Trent Alexander-Arnold struck a first time effort from Salah’s lay-off – narrowly missing the target as Onana remained rooted to the spot.

10 minutes later saw Liverpool go close once again, but for Luis Diaz’s effort to be thwarted by a fantastic last ditch defensive effort from Jonny Evans and co.

Fairly tame in derby terms, tempers started to flare in the final minutes. Luke Shaw was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Ibrahima Konate, seemingly in an act of revenge over a challenge on Hannibal Mejbri just moments before, before Diogo Dalot was red carded in the dying moments.

The Portuguese defender felt aggrieved by a decision that saw the hosts awarded a throw in, which resulted in him being shown two yellow cards for dissent within seconds of each other, leaving Manchester United with 10-men for the last couple of minutes.

What Next For Liverpool & Manchester United?

Up next for the Reds is some midweek Carabao Cup action as they welcome West Ham to Anfield in the competition’s quarter-finals, followed by a crunch top of the table clash against Arsenal at the weekend.

Manchester United players get to enjoy a midweek break as they have already been eliminated from the league cup, and return to Premier League action next Saturday as they too take on West Ham.
