Liverpool vs LASK Report: Reds Hit Four To Top Group E
Jurgen Klopp‘s side have reached the last-16 of the Europa League as group winners following Thursday night’s convincing 4-0 win over LASK Linz.
Liverpool took total control of the game early on when Luis Diaz opened the scoring with a smart header. He played a one-two with Joe Gomez, who’s cross was met by the Columbian inside just 12 minutes.
Just a couple of minutes later, the Reds doubled their lead. A well worked team move was finished off from close range by Cody Gakpo who only had to tap the ball into the back of the net.
The Premier League side had an array of chances to put the game to bed in the first half, but were made to wait until the 51st minute for a third goal.
LASK goalkeeper Tobias Lawal fouled Gakpo in the box after the Dutchman was in on goal. Salah converted calmly from the spot, scoring his 13th goal of the season, and it was a long way back for the Austrian side.
Gakpo proved to be the man of the moment at Anfield and he scored his second of the game late on after a perfectly-weighted pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Despite a gutsy effort from the visitors, they could not break down the resolute Liverpool backline and sit bottom of Group E with no chance of staying in the competition. However, if LASK do beat Toulouse in their final game they have a chance of dropping down into the Conference League, but will be relying on results elsewhere.
Liverpool Could Break Top-Flight Record
Three points for the Reds meant that they have now won their last 10 home games in all competitions by a margin of two or more goals. They’re only the second team to do so since Wolves between 1938 and 1939 (12 games), so could smash the record in the coming weeks.
Klopp’s side have now also won their first 10 games in all competitions for just the fourth time, also doing it in 1893-94 (first 16), 1972-73 (11) and 1985-86 (13).
The thumping win over LASK was the perfect response after they were shocked by Ligue 1 side Toulouse last time out in the competition, losing 3-2.
Liverpool now face an away trip to Union Saint-Gilloise in a couple of weeks time, in what will be their final Group E game.
