Liverpool will appeal against Curtis Jones red card picked up in their controversial loss to Tottenham at the weekend.
We are yet to receive a proper statement from the club but it seems as though Liverpool feel the challenge was not of malicious intent when Jones collided with Yves Bissouma.
Referee Simon Hooper initially gave a yellow card for the challenge but he was advised by VAR to look at the monitor. Hooper then decided to upgrade Jones’ card to a red which has gone down as a controversial decision.
Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville was not convinced by the red card:
“No, no, no. I know when you’re doing someone, I’ve done it myself, he wasn’t there to do someone.
“They’re showing the end motion which looks bad, but that’s not how it’s ended up there, his foot just slipped off the ball. It’s not a red card but he’s going to get one and it’s going to ruin the game probably.”
That decision was not the only huge talking point from the game, with the bizarre ruling out of Luis Diaz’s first half goal.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited [PGMOL] has acknowledged a ‘significant human error’ had occurred when it was incorrectly ruled offside. They have recently apologised for the error. Liverpool responded to the statement with one of their own which indicated that they will be looking at taking further action.
Diogo Jota was also sent off for two bookable offences but replays show on the first yellow card that Destiny Udogie trips himself up.
This is now Liverpool’s fourth red card of the season. The first came against Bournemouth with Alexis Mac Allister getting shown a straight red card but that decision was overturned about Liverpool had appealed it. They’ll be hoping lighting strikes twice with Jones’ red card incident.
