Liverpool lost a strange 38-match streak after defeat to Toulouse on Thursday 9th November. This streak involved striker Diogo Jota after he became the last player on the scoresheet.
What was the Liverpool unbeaten streak?
Liverpool lost their unbeaten streak which involved Jota scoring. The Reds hadn’t lost a game in the past 38 times that Jota had put the ball in the back of the net.
In fact, it’s the first time Jota has lost for Liverpool in a game where he has scored. The Portuguese international signed for the Merseysiders in summer of 2020 from Wolves, making this three-year spanning record very impressive.
He’ll also feel somewhat aggrieved as Liverpool thought they were coming home from France with a point, but VAR controversially ruled out youngster Jarell Quansah’s injury time equaliser.
Diogo Jota has certainly struggled with injury during his time at Liverpool which has somewhat contributed to the bizarre statistic. Calf and knee injuries have kept him out on the sidelines for some time. Overall, Jota has missed 256 days due to injury. That means he’s stat out 56 games for club and country over since 2020.
Jota has nearly hit the 50 goal mark in all competitions for Liverpool – he’s currently on 48. However, he has surpassed what he managed during his three-year spell at Wolves, which saw him score 44 goals.
What’s next for Diogo Jota?
Liverpool’s last match before the international break is a Premier League match at home to Brentford on Sunday (12th November). The kick-off time is 2pm.
Jota will then meet up with the Portugal team for their final matches in the EURO 2024 qualifiers. Portugal are one of few teams who have already confirmed their place in next year’s tournament that’s set to be hosted in Germany.
