Andy Newton returns with his horse racing Lay Of The Day tips on Tuesday 27th February 2024, where he’s got one runner to go AGAINST at Southwell races.

Lay Of The Day Tip For Horse Racing: Tuesday 27th February 2024

The UK horse racing cards on Tuesday come from Leicester, Catterick and Southwell (AW).

See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day tip – a fancied horse that he makes a case on why it might NOT win.

There are several ways to play this lay of the day tip. You can either join top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win (recent results below).

Or you could just rule this horse out and bet on another runner to win with the best horse racing betting sites.

Note: Most lays selected will be priced reasonably at 4/1 or shorter. However, if any should drift before the race to a much bigger price and liability, they are probably best avoided.

Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Horse Racing Tip On Tuesday: 7:30pm Southwell – VELVET VULCAN

This Murphy/Keady runner – VELVET VULCAN – was a solid winner at Lingfield last Friday by 3 3/4 lengths and based on that will catch the eye of punters.

However, that win came in a Classified Stakes race and is now back into a handicap on a 2lbs higher mark than when he last raced in a similar contest.

That success last week was also only his first from 12 runs and with it coming at Lingfield, will need to prove he’s as effective here at Southwell. He’s raced twice here before and is yet to score.

Today’s oppo looks a lot stronger than his last race, despite this only being a Class 6 handicap and we’ve also got last year’s winner in the race – Defence Treaty – for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies, who returns on a 5lb lower mark than 12 months ago.

Overall, you can see why the horse will be popular, but this will be a lot harder than his sole win last time, with eleven others running for us. With that in mind, I’m happy to look elsewhere for the winner.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for £10.

If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
