Andy Newton’s LAY OF THE DAY: 2:40 Wincanton: GEORGES SAINT
The Venetia Williams horses have been in fine fettle for over a month now, but they can’t keep up that strike-rate forever and there are slight signs that their good run of form might just be on the downward now – with their 14-day % dropping below 20% for the first time in a while.
They run GEORGES SAINT here and after dotting up in his last two at Ffos Las and Fakenham will be a popular pick again for the three-timer.
However, there are a few reasons to take this 8 year-old grey on. Firstly, he’s up another 7lbs here and in his last two races he’s also been ridden by 5lb claimers. Charlie Deutsch takes over today, so with this 7lb hike and no claimer, he’s really racing off a 12lb higher mark here.
Next up is the fact this race looks a lot more competitive than the ones he’s been racing in – albeit in the same grade. We’ll have course winners Jacamar and Huelgoat running for us, plus Iconic Muddle from the in-form Gary Moore team.
The final negative is the record of the Venetia Williams yard at Wincanton. They boast just a 4% strike-rate (1-from-24) with their chasers at the Somerset venue, while jockey Charlie Deutsch isn’t much better with only three winners here from his last 34 rides.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?
In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.
With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.
This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.
For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1), then you could lay this horse for £10.
If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).
See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.
You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
